Beijing Tour Itinerary
Day 1/Thu: Departing Home City
The journey begins with your transpacific flight departing from a city of
your choice. We lose a day upon crossing the
International Date
Line.
Day 2/Fri: Arrival in Beijing
Meet your guide on
arrival in late afternoon and transfer to 5-star
Sunworld
Dynasty Hotel Beijing or
The Great Wall Sheraton Hotel Beijing. The balance of the day is
at leisure.
Day
3/Sat: Beijing
Beijing is China's capital and the country's second largest city after
Shanghai, with more than 17 million people living in the city proper and
suburban areas in its jurisdiction. The ancient city is recognized as the
political, educational, and cultural center of the People's Republic of
China. The city currently claims six
UNESCO
World Heritage Sites.
We begin our day with a visit to
Tian'anmen Square,
followed by Forbidden City
and a leisurely walking tour of a
hutong area - hutong is an alleyway lined on both sides with
traditional residential courtyards. The Forbidden City, also known as Palace
Museum, was the place where the emperors of Ming (1368-1644) and Qing
(1644-1911) dynasties lived and carried out their administration. Welcome
dinner features delicious
Beijing roast duck, a local delicacy. (B/L/D)
Day 4/Sun: Beijing
Morning visit to the majestic Summer
Palace, a royal resort during the Qing Dynasty. After lunch we tour the
National
Stadium, nicknamed the "Bird nest", where the opening and closing
ceremonies of the 2008 Summer Olympic Games were held. Those who have no
interest in the Olympic venue may want to spend the afternoon exploring
Panjiayuan flea market on their own. The evening Peking Opera show is
optional if available. (B/L)
Day
5/Mon: Beijing
Enjoy a full-day excursion to the legendary
Great Wall, 90km northwest of the
city. Zigzagging over 6,000 kilometres from east to west along the
undulating mountains, the Great Wall, said to be visible from the moon, was
built to hold off tribal invaders from the north. On the way back to the
city in the afternoon we stop by at the Spirit Way at
Ming Tombs. The Spirit
Way, serving at the entrance to the Ming Tombs, is lined with statues of
guardian animals and officials. If time allows, a visit to the
cloisonné factory can be
arranged subject to all participants' endorsement. (B/L)
Day
6/Tue: Beijing
This morning we visit the sprawling complex of
Temple of Heaven.
Situated in southeastern Beijing the Temple of Heaven is China's largest
extant sacrificial temple where, during the Ming and Qing dynasties, the
emperors conducted the elaborate and most exalted sacrifices addressed to
"the Supreme Ruler of the Universe." Construction of the temple started in
1406, during the reign of the Ming Emperor Yongle, and took 14 years to
complete. The temple was expanded under the Qing emperors Qianlong
(1736-1796) and Jiaqing (1796-1820). Occupying 2,668 hectares (6,670 acres),
the area of the Temple of Heaven is more than twice that of the Imperial
Palace. After lunch we have the balance of the day at leisure, a perfect
time for souvenir shopping or exploring the ancient capital on your own.
(B/L)
Day 7/Wednesday: Beijing - North America

Beijing / Peking / 北京
Beijing is a metropolis in
northern China and the capital of the People's Republic of China.
Governed as a municipality under direct administration of the central
government, Beijing borders Hebei Province to the north, west, south,
and for a small section in the east, and Tianjin Municipality to the
southeast. Beijing is one of the Four Great Ancient Capitals of China
Beijing is China's second largest city after Shanghai, with more than 17
million people in Beijing's area of jurisdiction. The city is divided
into 16 urban and suburban districts and two rural counties; the city's
urban area has about 13 million residents. Beijing is a major
transportation hub, with dozens of railways, roads and motorways passing
through the city. It is also the destination of many international
flights arriving in China. Beijing is recognized as the political,
educational, and cultural center of the People's Republic of China,
while Shanghai and Hong Kong predominate in economic fields. The city
hosted the 2008 Olympic Games.
Few cities in the world besides Beijing have served as the political and
cultural centre of an area as immense as China for so long. The
Encyclopædia Britannica describes it as "one of the world's great
cities," and declares that the city has been an integral part of China’s
history for centuries; there is scarcely a major building of any age in
Beijing that doesn't have at least some national historical
significance. Beijing is renowned for its opulent palaces, temples, and
huge stone walls and gates. Its art treasures and universities have long
made the city a centre of culture and art in China.
