The

as the general's residence, in China during WW II when Chongqing (Chungking)
served as China's provisional capital. The museum overlooks Jialing River
and covers an area of about 1.2 acres. The museum's collection of wartime
photographs is very impressive and includes many precious photographs of
the
Flying Tigers, U.S. volunteers revered by the Chinese. Every year the
museum receives a large number of American visitors getting on or off
their Yangtze River cruise in Chongqing.
Who Is General Stilwell?
General Joseph Warren Stilwell (March 19, 1883 –
October 12, 1946) was a United States Army four-star General best-known
for his service in China and Burma. Stilwell's first visit to China was a
vacation to Shanghai in November 1911 when he was based in the
Philippines. He served his first tour in China 9 years later, which was
followed by two more. During his time in China he became fluent in
Chinese. From 1935 to 1939 he was the military attaché at the U.S.
Legation in Beijing (Peking). The general is widely admired by the Chinese
ever grateful for the enormous contributions by the United States to their
victory against the Japanese invaders.
You may go to
Wikipedia to learn more about this great American hero, but we highly
recommend
Barbara Tuchman's book, Stilwell and the American Experience in
China, 1911-1945, which is available at
amazon.com where the paperback costs only $13.60.
